Spirulina has proved invaluable for our horses for decades, in part for its high nutrient value but also thanks to its detoxifying properties. It's an excellent toxin-binder, specifically beneficial in supporting intestinal biome balance, and even better is mainly excreted via the liver-bile-intestine route, thus relieving the kidneys.
Spirulina helps to mitigate the risk of mycotoxins by the method of adsorption. Adsorption is the process by which carbohydrate components of algae cell walls bind to mycotoxins, removing them from the digestive tract before they have a chance to cause serious harm and negatively impact health and performance.
It's also useful to feed during each coat change, which puts extra biotransformation pressure on the liver and kidneys - see our Coat&Skin page for more information on this.
Spirulina is a type of microalgae with a very good amino acid pattern for horses; hence it produces a high quality of complete protein and essential nutrients more efficiently than most other food sources. One tablespoon of spirulina contains 5-6 grams of bioavailable protein.
Spirulina is energizing and detoxifying, containing phytonutrients, antioxidants, and essential nutrients including a high content of vit.B12, chlorophyll, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, GLA, and the blue-green pigment phycocyanin.
