Apart from keeping body fluids in balance and providing essential natural electrolytes (which play a key role in normal nerve/muscle/ kidney function
- really important - and blood sodium levels), sodium is also needed to balance potassium levels, both in grass and in the body, and especially in hot weather. See the Details
tab below for the full salt story.
EquiNatural sells beautiful unrefined, unpolluted, coarse-nib sea salt, certified by the Soil Association, available in bulk at seriously good prices compared to the supermarkets.
Sodium and chloride (salt) are the major electrolytes lost in sweat, followed by potassium, so we should feed around 20-25g salt daily to cover a baseline requirement. If you prefer to feed an electrolyte supplement, make sure this amount of salt is included in the composition.
Salt also encourages a horse to drink water; obvious for summer hydration but for winter too, as horses drink far less water in winter so we need to help encourage them to do so.
However, there is a small challenge - salt is hygroscopic, meaning it naturally attracts moisture. As a drying agent, it can alter the nutrient composition of minerals and vitamins when blended together. This can cause a mineral supplement with fine salt to lose its essential structure and potentially shorten its shelf life. For this reason, we choose not to include salt in our EquiVita.
It’s far better to use coarse
salt nibs, which degrade much more slowly. This approach is also ideal for horses that dislike the taste of salt, as it avoids an overpowering salty flavour.
100% pure unrefined coarse sea salt, certified under the approved product Soil Association scheme
Feed: 4g/100kg bodyweight per day, thus for a 500kg horse add 20g daily to feed.
