Known as the ‘colon broom’, psyllium cleans as it sweeps its way through the GI tract.

Psyllium husk is both a soluble and insoluble fibre with many benefits. It can relieve both mild diarrhea and constipation, and its resistance to digestion allows it to help regulate high cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood sugar levels.

Similarly to other soluble fibres, psyllium passes through the small intestine without being completely broken down or absorbed. Instead, it absorbs water and becomes a thick, gel-like compound which also makes it very soothing for an irritated, inflamed gut. This can also slow down intestinal transit and increase feelings of fullness after eating.

As for loose droppings, no problem. Psyllium's fibre firms them up and slows down their passage through the colon. Equally, when there's constipation psyllium acts as a gentle, bulk-forming laxative, binding to partially digested food and absorbing water which increases the size and moisture of stools, making them easier-to-pass.

Psyllium also binds to cholesterol in the digestive process. This helps the body excrete it before passing through into the bloodstream, decreasing overall blood cholesterol levels.

Psyllium is also a beneficial prebiotic, which are non-digestible compounds that nourish intestinal bacteria and help them grow.

Safety

Psyllium is considered extremely safe. However, psyllium could delay the absorption of certain medications, therefore we suggest consulting your vet if your horse is on other medicines.
