    Functional Nutritional Value

    Key Constituents

    1. Gypenosides (Saponins)
      • Action: Gypenosides are the primary active compounds in Jiaogulan, known for their adaptogenic and health-promoting effects.
      • Benefit: They help regulate blood lipid levels, which is beneficial for maintaining good health.

    2. Flavonoids
      • Action: These compounds are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities.
      • Benefit: They contribute to the plant's ability to protect against oxidative stress and support cardiovascular health.

    3. Polysaccharides
      • Action: These complex carbohydrates have been shown to possess immunomodulatory effects and may play a role in the plant's adaptogenic properties.
      • Benefit: They support the immune system and overall health.

    4. Amino Acids
      • Action: Gynostemma pentaphyllum extract contains amino acids that are essential for the human body.
      • Benefit: These amino acids play important roles in maintaining normal physiological functions.

    5. Adaptogenic Compounds
      • Action: Gynostemma pentaphyllum is considered an adaptogen, meaning it helps the body to adapt to stress and maintain homeostasis.
      • Benefit: This is largely due to its ability to modulate the immune system and reduce stress-related symptoms.

    6. Antithrombotic Compounds
      • Action: Jiaogulan has been shown to possess anti-inflammatory properties, which can be beneficial for conditions such as arthritis and other inflammatory disorders.
      • Benefit: This contributes to its potential in supporting cardiovascular health.

    Primary Actions

    • Vasodilator: Jiaogulan supports the production of nitric oxide from vascular endothelial cells that line the walls of the horse’s blood vessels, making it an excellent herb to support circulation.
    • Bronchodilator: Jiaogulan may also promote respiratory function through increased blood flow and bronchodilation (opening of the airways).
    • Anti-inflammatory: The saponins in Jiaogulan are responsible for its anti-inflammatory effects, making it a valuable tool in managing equine conditions associated with inflammation.
    • Immune Modulator: Jiaogulan helps horses cope with various stressors without causing harm or imbalance to their bodies.
    • Antioxidant: Jiaogulan functions as a potent antioxidant, neutralizing harmful free radicals and supporting cellular health.
    • Tissue Support: Jiaogulan can support healthy connective tissue like tendons and ligaments.

    Applications for Horses

    • Circulatory Support: Jiaogulan works primarily by increasing the production of nitric oxide from vascular endothelial cells that line the walls of the horse’s blood vessels. Higher levels of nitric oxide circulating in the blood results in dilation of blood vessels and increased blood flow.
    • Tendon & Ligament Recovery: Jiaogulan can support healthy connective tissue like tendons and ligaments.
    • Respiratory Health: Jiaogulan may also promote respiratory function through increased blood flow and bronchodilation (opening of the airways).
    • Immune Resilience: Jiaogulan helps horses cope with various stressors without causing harm or imbalance to their bodies.
    • Energy & Vitality: Jiaogulan has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries to promote vitality.

    Contraindications

For more information, refer to Dr. Kellon’s book, Horse Journal: Guide to Equine Supplements and Nutraceuticals.

    • Jiaogulan will NOT prevent laminitis and will not help a horse with laminitis unless the underlying cause has been found and corrected and the feet are properly trimmed. However what jiaogulan does do is encourage good circulation through the feet by relaxing the blood vessels and encouraging regrowth of vessels in areas that have been damaged. It also has an anticlotting effect. Feet may grow at a more rapid rate. Horses harbouring collections of fluid/infection in the feet may become lamer within the first week or two of starting as these collections begin to mobilise. It is apparently very common for abscesses/collections to surface and drain in these first few weeks.
    • Do not feed if your horse has active inflammation, i.e. soft tissue injury.
    • If your horse requires emergency care and tranquilisation or surgery, inform the treating veterinarian that you are using a herb that is a peripheral vasodilator. Feed rate adjustments and careful monitoring may be needed when the last feed amount was administered within 8 to 12 hours of these drugs being required.
    • Do not administer to dehydrated horses or horses with a heart condition.
    • Discontinue aspirin or herbs with aspirin-like effects (e.g. White Willow, Meadowsweet) two weeks before starting Jiaogulan.
    • Do not feed alongside the following:
      - Ginsengs
      - Phenylbutazone
      - Banamine
      - Ketofen or human over the counter pain relievers
      - Nitroglycerin
      - Trental/pentoxyfylline
      - Ginkgo
      - Hawthorn berry
      - Plant derived antioxidant such as grapeseed extract, bioflavonoids, herbs with high saponin content
      - Turmeric
      - Curcumin
      - Vitamin C supplements
      - Heparin
      - Coumadin/Warfarin
      - Drugs which lower blood pressure, such as tranquilisers
