The safety of comfrey has been debated for decades due to the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs), which have been shown to be toxic in certain conditions. While the extent of risk is still discussed, it’s important to consider its potential toxicity before use.
The safest approach is to feed the leaf only, but not to the pregnant or nursing mare, in the event of liver conditions or cancer, or when taking liver-affecting medications.
For external use, absorption of PAs through the skin is considered minimal, making short-term application generally regarded as safe when limited to 4-6 weeks per year. (Easley & Horne, 2016; Visser, 2019; Gardner & McGuffin, 2013; Hoffmann, 2003).
