In the Ayurvedic tradition of India, Ashwagandha is considered a rasayana - a life-prolonging tonic, and I couldn't agree more. Ashwagandha is one of my favourite herbs for getting me through times of stress, tension, pressure - it really does help rebalance 'life' by 'normalising' the stress response.

Interestingly the name Ashwagandha translates literally to ' that which has the smell of a horse, as it gives the vitality and sexual energy of a horse '. Wow! This name alludes to the root’s strong odour as well as its use to restore strength and vitality, and (not that I can speak from personal experience (!) but it's said to ...) improve and enhance sexual drive. Rather than working like an aphrodisiac, this wonderful root is believed to work gradually over time to lower stress levels that may inhibit sex drive.

Like most adaptogens, ashwagandha also acts as an immunomodulant by preventing white blood cell depletion and by activating lymphocytes. One small study in 2009 showed patients taking 6ml of an ashwagandha extract twice a day showed a major change in immune cell activation within 96 hours. It's used in India to support cancer protocols, modestly improving survival rates in women with breast cancer apparently, and has been studied for its potential benefits for people with type 2 diabetes. It's also been shown to provide significant benefits for patients with bipolar disorder.

We blend it into both our CushTonics , and our PollenTonic , StressTonic and UlsaTonic.

Safety

  • Ashwangandha should not be used during pregnancy unless under the care of a qualified healthcare professional (Gardner & McGuffin, 2013).
  • Whilst extremely rare in horses, avoid in cases of hyperthyroidism due to the herb’s stimulating effect on the thyroid (Winston, 2007).
