BIOMETONIC *Protects the intestinal biome environment, aka the 'Oily Herbs'

In our human world probiotics are one of the fastest growing segments in the supplement industry. And no surprise because so many people are struggling with gastrointestinal issues, with a huge range of probiotics marketed as the solution. Yet despite their popularity, not all of us find relief in probiotics; many of us even experience negative effects.

So the question is – do they really work? For those of you that have followed my updates over the years, you’ll know I’ve been actively following the science behind the gut biome and probiotics since 2020, and the fact is that science is still learning about the human gut microbiome, never mind our horses’ biomes. And what the human studies are showing is that adding a few species of a small quantity of bacteria inside the gut … well, for many it just doesn’t cut the mustard, and can even rock the boat.

The balance of bacteria within the gut and throughout the body is as unique as a fingerprint, so there's no guarantee that even feeding a probiotic supplement will establish the right balance in the biome, so there's no guarantee of crowding out the gut-damaging, pro-inflammatory pathogen bacteria.

Studies show that in human patients only around 15-25% of people think they gain some benefit, with the rest not really noticing a difference but take them anyway because they think they may help. On the other side, some people have an adverse reaction in that it can make the gas and bloating worse.

We know this because people can communicate their responses, but our horses can’t, and it’s a fact that when it comes to equine research, there’s very little out there to go by.

More often than not we’re feeding a probiotic but not addressing the underlying causes of gut dysfunction, primarily chronic stress of some kind or eating the wrong foods that promote the unfriendly bacterial growth. So in order to correct the problem we really have to address the issue of diet.

What’s known to help are our old friends, herbs, and there are many to choose from – turmeric, andrographis, garlic, plus what we know as the ‘oily herbs’ … all known to suppress pathogens in the gut and help balance the colonies of normal flora. And this includes suppressing yeast overgrowth in there as well.

So it’s the same old from me – whether human or horse, it’s all about the right diet, supported by herbs, and lest we forget, our old friends prebiotics as well, to add valuable natural prebiotic roughage diversity to our horse's diet to restore and maintain a healthy gut function.

• 5g/100kg bodyweight per day (i.e. 25g daily for a 500kg horse), in daily feed.
• 1-yr shelf life.
